TESOL (Teaching English as a Second
Language) and
TEFL (Teaching English
as a Foreign Language) are interchangeable terms. Different schools
use different terms, but there is no difference between “TEFL
Training Courses” and “TESOL Training Courses”.
In the past, it was often much easier for untrained native speakers
to find work teaching English in foreign countries. Today, however,
a TESOL Certificate is a minimum requirement for many English teaching
jobs overseas. A TESOL Certificate is obtained by taking a specialized
TESOL Training course that covers English teaching techniques and
methodologies. While it may still be possible to obtain work in certain
countries and in certain schools without training, you will be at
a considerable disadvantage if you decide not to take a TESOL Training
Course.
The benefits of a TESOL Course or other training program are clear.
It will help you:
- Get a Job –The majority
of reputable TESOL schools and academies require TESOL Certificates.
By meeting this minimum requirement, you will be eligible for the
jobs you want.
- Receive Better Pay –
On average, TESOL Certified teachers earn more than non-certified
teachers. Investing the time and money in a TESOL course will pay
immediate dividends in the higher pay you will receive.
- Obtain a More Stable Job
– Because of your certification, the jobs you obtain will
tend to be more stable – with more hours and less chance of
variable schedules and unexpected work stoppages.
- Teach More Effectively –
Don’t assume that because you can speak English you were born
with the ability to teach it! Like any job, teaching English requires
a specific skill-set and knowledge base, which can only be acquired
through training and practice. ** Even if you have considerable
experience teaching other subjects, you still need to become accustomed
to TESOL techniques and methodology before you can be an effective
English teacher.
- Enjoy Your Teaching Experience
– With the training you receive during your TESOL Course,
you will have time to get a feel for teaching English as a foreign
language, and figure out the approach with which you are most comfortable.
This way, your first months on the job will be more productive and
enjoyable – rather than a period of painful trial and error
for you and your students.
However, be careful when selecting
you TESOL Course! You need to be sure that the course you choose
is a reputable organization and that the certificate they award you
will be recognized by employers in the area where you plan to teach.
Furthermore, not everyone has the same needs or personal circumstances.
Time, money, and geographical constraints might all affect the type
of course you require. By considering the various TESOL courses available
and comparing them to your own needs, you will be able to select the
right course for you.
When comparing different TESOL Certificate programs, keep two points
in mind: Which TESOL course will improve your teaching the skills
the most; and which TESOL course will best prepare you for obtaining
the job you want
